Feruz is a model youngster. She has a first degree (LLB) in Law. She uses her time wisely and finds time for many activities. She is currently working as a public prosecutor. She is also a singer who performs on the stage. In addition to sports she studies Italian and French languages. She told us she is a frequenter of the gym.

She was born in Arareb, Sahel, in 1982. She attended the first and second grades in Sahel. Then, after independence she continued her studies in “Natsnet,” “Harbegnatat,” and “Sema’etat” schools Asmara. After passing in the national school leaving certificate exam (matrik), she enrolled in the university. In 2006 she graduated with LLB degree in law after five years of study. A short interview with Feruz follows.

When you were young, what did you want to become?

- I was a science student and I liked Biology, especially. But when I joined the university in 2000, I chose to study law.

Why did you choose law? And did you like it?

-When I joined the university I had the chance to read some law books. What’s more, books on crime used to fascinate me. So I wanted to study law. I liked studying Law. The more I learned, the more I was attracted to the subject and field of Law.

What have you gained from it?

-Studying Law mainly makes you a responsible person. Because you are taught to weigh up things legally, you become careful before doing things.

Where did you first start professional work? And where are you working now?

- I stared work in the Central (Ma’ekel) Zone as an assistant judge. Currently I am working in the Central Prosecutor’s Office as a prosecutor.

What is the percentage of youth in crime? What are the main crimes committed by them?

- In general we can safely say that the participation of the Eritrean youth in crime is low. Here it is clear that the role of the community is very positive and supportive. But this does not mean that there are no crimes committed by the young. Most of the crimes committed in our country are done by the youth. The most common crimes are: stealing, cheating, robbery, etc.

In your view, how can this be solved?

- Most of the youth who commit crimes have some problems. Their problems may be of economic nature or ones that arises from personal psychological stress. But these problems need to be solved in a proper manner, such as work or other means. Otherwise, if a person turns to crime to solve his/her problems he/she is getting into another bigger problem.

Another matter, there need to come a change of behavior. Most of the persons who commit crimes are not first-time offenders but repeaters. So, when they are in prison there must be a way to change, educate and rehabilitate them to become productive members of the society. This is done in some level. But this must become the main task of the prisons and it must be implemented with more dedication.

As a female prosecutor, how do you view the crimes perpetuated over women?

- One of the crimes on women is rape. The first type of rape is: when a man forces a girl or woman to have sex with him without her consent. This may be done by forcing her physically or threatening her or by putting her in a situation where she cannot defend or manage herself. The second type is: when a man has sex with an underage girl. Here, it is irrelevant whether she consents or not. The fact that she is underage makes the man guilty by law. Her consent has no legal validity.

What should women do in order to avoid such problems of rape?

- Most of the rape crimes are committed at night in darkness. Most of the victims are those who leave work late at night. So they must get enough protection and cooperation from their families and employers. Those who are victimized outside the factors of late work hours must be careful themselves. They ought to choose hours and places which do not put them at risk. But mainly, the people who commit such crimes must have conscience. They should remember that these are their sisters and fellow citizens.

What should a woman do if she faces the risk of rape?

- First, she should defend or protect herself as much as possible. When she falls into the risk of rape attempt, she must search for ways to get help. For example, crying or shouting. Thus the rapist may leave her or other people may help or rescue her. Also, if the rape happens, the people who heard or/and saw her can serve as witnesses in her case.

If a woman is raped, she must immediately report to the nearest police station. This helps her to have the symptoms of rape recorded, and in the absence of witnesses these symptoms (medical or visual) can help prove the crime and punish the suspected or accused rapist. In addition the victim can find medical support to prevent pregnancy, or other (STD) diseases. But some women fail to report the rape to the police because of shame, fear or risk of alienation. This is a big mistake and can lead to bigger problems.

What are the other crimes or offenses that women face?

- Some girls or women are tricked into having sex with men with false promises of marriage and then they get pregnant. Here, there’s something that puzzles me. All creatures living in the world are beautiful. And we women are the most beautiful ones. So, being a woman is more than enough. If we add self-confidence to this we, women can achieve our goals. We can make rational decisions confidently, and lead happy and productive lives.

Many times women are fooled with men’s false promises, and this, I believe, is due to low self-esteem. So I want to say this to them. In our relationship with men let’s take ourselves as complimentary to them. We are not incomplete people who need to serve them or depend on them, but their equal and cooperative partners.

How do you advise young people to meet the problems they face at work?

- First we, the youth, ought to know our basic rights. For example, an employee (worker) needs to know all the labor laws. Then when he or she feels they have been wronged, they can fight for their rights according to the law. Generally the concerned authorities must work hard to educate the public about the law.

Your views concerning harmful tradition that ought to be abolished?

- We have many traditions that need to be abolished. One of them is FGM, (female genital mutilation). The old public or traditional rationale for this act is: circumcision controls or regulates the woman’s sexual appetite. If we see this from the scientific point of view, sexual feelings arise not from the particular organs but from the mind. So in order to prevent a girl from becoming sexually wild, we need to cultivate her mind (attitude) and not cut a part of her body.

In addition, shouldn’t the girl have legitimate sexual feelings? Because she has the right to enjoy sexual satisfaction in the proper time and place (in marriage.) But FGM is not only harmful to her health; it is also abuse of her natural (bodily) rights. Currently according to Eritrean laws, FGM is a crime punishable by law. So everyone should be aware.

How do you relax?

– I watch films. I like to read especially, books on psychology and law. I also enjoy listening to music and I sing too.

When did you start singing? When was the first time you sang on stage holding a microphone?

- I enjoyed singing or repeating songs ever since I was still a young child. At home, I used to hold a spoon and pretend it was a microphone. In 1998 during the Independence Day celebrations I took part in the youth mass sport (aerobics.) Then when we went to May-Habar for a picnic, I saw the “Aser” Cultural Group (under the Ministry of education) performing. At the time some of my girl friends who knew that I liked signing, encouraged me to sing. Since I liked singing very much, I asked them to allow me to sign and I sang.

What was the audience feedback then, and what happened next?

- When people came to cheer me, I was encouraged and convinced myself that I could sing professionally. Later, in 2004, when I was studying at the University of Asmara, I started singing professionally at the “Hakose’e” (NCEW) stage, repeating English pop songs. In 2006 I sang as a back-up vocalist in the late great Eritrean artist Abraham Afewerki’s latest album “Semay”. I participated in four of the songs there.

When was your first public and official appearance as a singer?

- My first public or professional appearance was in 2007, during the Independence Day celebration in the Asmara Stadium. I performed a number entitled “Werki Mosob,” written by artist Habtom Yemane. After that I sang a song in the Somali language about the unity of the Somali people. I have prepared a song about FGM, and I have other works also.

What kind of songs do you enjoy?

- Songs are the means of communicating with the people and their influence is great. So the message or theme in the songs (lyrics) needs to be constructive. Personally, I do not like songs that focus on revenge, (doing harm to those who have harmed you) or song with low self-esteem (for example those who sentimentally dwell on poverty as a weakness). Our songs should be vehicles for unity, high self-esteem; boosting morale … I like those kinds of songs. As for me I want to write songs that enhance the self-confidence of women.

Do you read newspapers and magazines” Which columns or parts do you enjoy more?

- Yes, I do. In “Men’sey” (Youth) magazine for example, I like the part about Law and Order. In the “Hadas Eritra” newspaper, I enjoy the column “Hanti Alem” (One World.) I like other works of art dealing with the youth in general.

Where or how do you spend your free time?

-I do not have mush free time. All the spare time I have, I spend in studying (language such as French and Italian.) In addition I am taking cooking lessons. Everyday I also exercise in the gym.

Many men do not prefer to choose educated girls/women for marriage. In your opinion, why is this is so?

- I think this is mainly because of their lack of self-confidence. The truth should be to the contrary: men should prefer educated women for marriage. If a woman is educated she is a better partner. She can manage her family life better and she is more productive economically. (By working.) Even the children can benefit better when the woman is educated.

Your comments about HIV/AIDS?

- As always: let us be careful, with all-sided care. In addition to avoiding unsafe promiscuous sex, we should be careful about the sharp instruments that we use in common. I feel we are often neglecting this.

In our manner of sensitization, for a long time we have only been addressing a limited section of the society. For example, our sensitization focuses on prostitutes, men who travel a lot due to their work and people who engage in sex much. But we should inform and educate people that any person can be infected with HIV. We have to take care even about those people whom we consider safe or healthy.

I also believe that we have to pass to the stage where we should take care of those people living with HIV/AIDS. Because most of the sensitization and education programs we hold are addressing the stages of pre-HIV/AIDS care.

Do you have any last comments and appreciation?

- I want to thank my family for helping and supporting me to reach this level. I want to thank my mother Himan Tsegay, especially, who provided me with everything.

The times we are living in are very dangerous and tempting. Nevertheless, we, the young, have to challenge them. I want to say that we should work hard and patiently to realize our goals and not be fooled by temporary pleasures and enjoyments.

Every summer and particularly in August, Eritreans become extra busy with social events by celebrating the annual Festivals in Eritrea and around the world. The events are major contributors to Eritrean societies around the world with out exception. They play important roles and have become an integral part to the Eritrean way of life worthy of gratitude and source of comfort to all Eritreans for many reasons.

The primary reason for the festivals is Eritrean UNITY! Every thing else is bonus. The benefits fill wide range of needs for all involved. Young Eritreans get to know each other; Eritrean leaders deliver updates and hear from the public, artists display and sell their art; and sports take center stage exciting the young and uniting them. Eritrean restaurants are full, businesses get their share and some get opportunities to network. Eritrean artists sell their newly released CD’s, show-case their talents and get their props or love from their adoring fans on concerts. It is a win-win situation for all involved. And every year the music sounds better and the concerts get livelier.

This year, I had the opportunity to attend festivals in two cities a week apart; in Toronto Canada on the first week of August and a week later in DC; and as you may have guessed, I received my charge.

The purpose of my trip to Canada was to visit family. However, since all my family members were attending the festival in Toronto, I tagged along. The concert was on a Public Park and the music started late while we lollygagged around uninterested. The local Eritrean bands of Toronto finished playing and warmed up the audience. Then all the sudden and to my surprise, I heard familiar music that caught my attention. I turned around and I was looking at this imposing stage with a beautiful sunset rays that beamed from the back of it giving a hallo affect and making it difficult to see who was playing on stage; and attracted by the action I drew closer to the stage.

The music was intense, fun, relentless and it took me a minute to realize I was watching musicians from Eritrea, direct from Asmara. Better yet, it is Brikti Tanki, the legendary musician amongst many. The singer that really rocked the house was Dawit Shilan. He turned the place upside down with his fiery songs that combined the oldies but goodies like Konjitiye, songs from the sixties and Guayla that sent the place into frenzy. I was awed with his intensity and mastery of the traditional Kirar accompanied by energetic base player that moved the place. It was a dream, a dream I didn’t expect to experience with great quality of sound and musical coordination. I was blown away and happy that I tagged along not expecting any thing!

I love music and I love Eritrean music for every thing it represents. I always look forward to attend and enjoy the annual DC festival in Upper Marlboro and every year it seems like the event gets better. This year was special because one my favorite singer, Helen Meles was the featured artist. She didn’t disappoint. It is fulfilling to see hundreds if not thousands flock from their seats on-to the dance floor. Kids, elders, young men and women in Unisom covered the dance floor with a nationalistic fervor that puts any one into a patriotic trance. And the love expressed from the audience to the musicians was a testament to the point I am making.

Once again, I was awed by the quality of music and the coordination of the musicians. I was particularly blown away by the base guitar played by Yemane that hovered on the stage non stop beautifully with minimum breaks and interruption driving those who were dancing crazy. The concerts I attended in combination with newly released CD’s by Bereket Mengisteab, Wedi Tukul, and Tareke Tesfahiwot among others made for a special August musically.

But, what’s the big deal?

Eritrean music and musicians are by far the most patriotic musicians to say the least. And what they endured over the last thirty-plus years was nothing but amazing. They lost their musical resources, lost their physical musical environments, lost their freedom to express their patriotism, they were physically disbursed around the world and to top it there was no institutional support to encourage and nurture them. In other terms it means that the fate of Eritrean music was the fate of Eritrea, it was meant to die!

What is inspiring is the fact that through all these challenges, Eritrean musicians persevered and sustained the musical needs of Eritrea through thick and thin. It did not matter that they could not afford musical equipments, or they lacked the technology, or advanced technical expertise that could have allowed them to keep up with musicians around the world, but they kept feeding us music that we needed; to inspire, console, entertain, love and so on. That is a true legacy of every Eritrean musician with out exception. They gave us music from Meda, Saudi Arabia, Italy, US and from every where around the world consistently.

However, what made this years musical success even more special is the fact that it came on the hills of a major sanctions against the people of Eritrea by the US. Without getting specific and veer-away from my subject; Eritrean music, Eritrean musicians and the people of Eritrea are one of the same. Once again, Eritrean musicians answered the call and gave Eritrea a uniting spirit. The unity many try to weaken unsuccessfully. They try because they don’t understand; they fail to understand Eritrea is for REAL! They can sanction all they want, but it is certain that Eritrea will always find a way. Eritrea can screw a whole some-how, and create an opening to say here we are! A testament of the illusive resilience unseen any where!

Even better, after a successful YPFDJ conference; all those who attended received another opportunity to thank Helen Meles and the band on Sunday August 31st. What was special about that night? To see the young future of Eritrea truly appreciating each other and the music was a blessing. Moreover, the camaraderie amongst them was impregnable! All these, while they hoisted, waved and danced with Eritrean Flag. What a fulfilling and heart warming experience! I Love Erei!!

My name is Mereb Estifanos. I was born in Arareb, Sahel, in 1983. My father and mother are both EPLF fighters. My father’s name is Estifanos Derar, and my mother is Negesti Wolde-Mariam. I completed my high school studies in Asmara.

What did you aspire to become when you grew up?

When I was a student I used to be a good volleyball player. But internally I wanted to become a dancer and singer.

How did you become an actress?

It was by simple chance. In 2002, while I was a student in grade 11, Captain Fessehaye Lemlem (the screenwriter for the film “Fermeley”) called me and asked me to act in a film. This was very sudden for me. Then he told me to meet him at Cinema Asmara. I met him and Mr. Michael Emahazion (Jende, the veteran artist.) They asked me to act in the film they were producing. Then I accepted and said I’d try it. I started acting as a reserve with a second actress. It was hard for me to work with great artists like Gizyenesh Menges. I was both shy and scared. Finally, with hard work I was chosen to play the character. My partner Yonatan (Tan-tan) encouraged me a lot. The film opened my acting career for me. I want to thank Captain Fessehaye Lemelem.

When you were working in the film “Fermeley,” what were your feelings? And what feedback did you get from viewers?

Since it was my first acting experience I was shy and afraid. But I think I did well. I got good reviewers from the audience saying that I did well.

How do your parents see your acting career?

They see it positively. My father and mother especially encourage me a lot. They remind me to keep the time of my rehearsal, etc.

What kind of character do you like to play?

In all the films I have acted so far, I play the role of a girl who is loved by others. But I would like to play the role of a lover. I think love is relevant to boys and girls equally, so I’d like to play the role of a lover. But I think the choice really belongs to the directors or others.

What efforts do you make to improve your professional skill

I try to learn from people (actors, producers and actress, etc) who are experienced in the field. I read books and watch many films (local and foreign).

Have you taken any courses to improve your skills?

Only once. The course was given by the Department of Cultural Affairs, PFDJ for three months, in Asmara.

How much do you love this job? In how many films have you acted so far?

I love it very much. I have acted in more than ten films. Including; “Hareg,” “Fermeley,” “Werasi Kidan,” “Gezie,” “Mezgeb,” “Shalom,” “Azmarino,” “Ketali Sehbet,” “Fekri Tsa’iru,”…

Can an actor/actress make a living from acting?

I think that would be difficult, because you can’t earn enough through acting. It is only an occasional work. We actors do not have a monthly salary, so I think it’s not possible.

What is the role of women in the development of the Eritrean film industry, so far? And what is the reason?

In most of the films produced in our country these days, I don’t believe women are as active as they should be. Their participation is fundamental. The reason they are not active is, for various reasons. They are doing their part, but not enough. One reason could be the pressure by parents. In others, while the women have the initiative they don’t get the opportunity.

Why do you think there is parental pressure not to act for females?

So far our society’s understanding about films or plays has been negative. But now it’s certainly improving. In the past, people who take part in arts or plays/films were considered as bad or immoral people. Sometimes people think that the character you play in the film is your real personality. So, I think these could be some of the reasons. But I believe acting is just like any other work.

In our films, there are not many female screenwriters or directors. What is the reason?

First, I think it’s because there is not enough initiative on their part. Secondly, only a few believe they can do it and start. There is no reason why women cannot become screenwriters and film directors.

Do you plan to write or direct films?

I do try some writing. In the future I plan to write more. But concerning directing films, I’m too young and inexperienced for it. Maybe, later.

What do you think an actor needs to do to become good and play the role of the character given him/her perfectly?

The most basic is training (rehearsal). Personally, when I’m given a part to play I search for someone similar to that role. Then I watch her actions and other activities. Then I try it and train many times. So if you work hard and rehearse, I don’t see there’s any problem becoming the character. The main responsibility lies with the director.

What are your future plans?

I want to continue and grow in this profession of acting. I believe I need to work very hard in order to grow. If I could get some formal professional training it would be very helpful. I also want to take part in singing and dancing.

What is your advice to the youth concerning HIV/AIDS?

As has been stated repeatedly, you need to abstain or be faithful with a single partner. And for those who are HIV positive, let us show kindness and care for them.

What do you think is the role of the youth in the protection and building of the nation?

Although I was born in Sahel, I did not know much about national issues. I did not understand much what my parents used to tell me about the nation. But now I am mature and can understand much. So we the youth must work with all our ability in order to build and protect our nation and help it prosper.

Does a female actress face any challenges in particular?

Personally, I have not faced any problems related to my acting. I have a good, respectable working relationship with actors and directors.

What is the relationship and cooperation among you actors?

All the older and more experienced actors help, correct and support us during work.

Your role in the TV-serial “Hareg” (The Vine) was good. How did you face the task?

The work was very hard for me. As you know it’s a long serial film. So I had a lot to do including studying (memorize) the script, choose the costumes, etc. We spent a long time in rehearsal and shooting. In short the work was demanding. But through the hard work of the writer, director and all the others, we completed the work successfully.
Personally how did you like the character you were playing, “Feruz”? Why? And what about your character’s two separate “lovers” Tekhle and Daniel?
I really liked “Feruz,” because she was honest and wise. And she was steadfast in her principles and stand. But Tekhle was bad! He wanted to buy love through money and force. As for Daniel, he was the opposite of Tekhle.

How did you manage to produce the tears while acting?

Most of the time, I produced the tears from deep inside.

How do you evaluate the film (serial) “Hareg”? And which characters did you like most?

I think it was quite good. The complications in the story were interesting. I especially like the part about Tekhle and his mother. They were very close and supported each other well. They learned their lesson from their mistakes. And finally Feruz was rewarded for her patience and tolerance. The film was educational. I like Tekhle and his mother best.

Some people say that the film was ended suddenly and it should have been continued. What do you think?

Every film has to stop somewhere and can’t go on until the end. For some of the points, the viewer has to fill in by himself or herself. Some can make their own conclusions. My only regret is that for Daniel. His honesty and integrity should have been made more clear.

Do you have appreciations for anyone?

I thank my family for helping me to reach this level. I also want to thank artist Awel Said for supporting me in my career. Mainly I want to thank the public, young and old, for supporting me for my modest contribution and encouraging me. I hope to work hard and please the public with more deserving work in the future.

Which artist do you admire?

I admire all the artists in our nation. But especially I admire the veteran artists, Miakel Jende, Tekhlit Kugne, Atsbehet Abraha, Gizyenesh Menges. And from the younger artists, I admire: Alolo, Tekhlit Solmon, Hagos Suzinino, Weyni China, Beynesh Kiros, Makda Abraha. As for singers I admire, Dawit Shelan, Tesfay Mengesha, Temesgen Taniko, Helen Meles.

Whom do you want to emulate?

I admire Helen Meles and I want to be like her.

How is your health?

I am fine. No problem.

Any final words?

In our country the profession of acting is still in the rise. Similarly with music. I support the “Shingrwa” program (the search for new singers and dancers.) There are many talented young persons in the country, in the military and elsewhere, who can write, sing, act, etc. So I suggest someone, either the NUEYS, or other concerned authorities should explore and find these talented people in the military, the rural areas, etc. They would find many outstanding artists yet undiscovered.

In the acting field, I suggest that the actors, like other professionals or artists, be organized in a union or association and be paid regular salaries and given the chance and develop and grow.
I’m sharing my experience with people all over the world, this is a good opportunity for me, I’m very happy.

How did you come to cinema in Eritrea?

We don’t have film schools in Eritrea. We get to cinema through self-learning because we have lots of stories to tell, we have a big love to share to the world. We have some limitation because we are not technically developed enough. But we work hard, we read, we organize some short-intensive courses by inviting other people from abroad, from Europe, from America. We ask anyone who is expert to come and that’s how I came to cinema.

Do you have training possibilities?

In Eritrea, yes. I work in the Cultural Affairs department in my country. That’s what we do, we organize some intensive courses. Our resources are limited but we organize it.

And yourself, how did it come? Why did you want to make films?

It’s an internal call. You have some call inside, to contribute something to your society. You have some push, you can call it a love for people, you can call it a care for people. You don’t sleep all night, you wake up and you write something. You see some problem in the society and you try to solve that problem. I’m forced to make some things, to write.

Is The Beautiful Ones your first long feature film?

No, it’s my second movie. I also write short dramas, stage dramas that display on independent stage, in our country, in the festival of Eritrea. We work different kind of dramas and also movies.

Is there a production of short films in your country?

During 2005, we organized three-month long training. We organized the students in four groups so we produced four short films. It was practical training, it was fantastic. We have four of them, we tried to translate some of them and send them to some other festivals but we couldn’t do that due to some technical problem. We tried.

Do you show your films in the east-african festivals? In Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania ?

If the invitations come to us, if things are ok with the funding, we will come to participate. But from Uganda, the Amakula Kampala International Film Festival tried to invite us, and asked us again and again. But we couldn’t do it because of some technical problems. We would like to participate anywhere, all over the world, why not?

About your film The Beautiful Ones, who are the beautiful ones?

I was talking about the young people, they’re all beautiful ones. We’re beautiful inside or outside but the main theme is if you don’t take care of yourself, if you just throw yourself to some bad habits, drinking, smoking or something, someone is going to take your fortune. This guy was handsome, was a successful businessman, he was successful in every aspect of his life but he couldn’t take care of himself, he threw himself into bad habits so he lost his fiancée to the other one. The other doctor was a very careful person, a decent person, a persuasive person but the lady, the main actress, she was obliged to make such decision whether it is for love of her fiancée or for the reality of the other person. She sacrificed everything to choose her love but her fiancée didn’t help her, he just throws himself on the bad habit, he throws his flower, his life too, he had an accident, he lost his life. No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter the love that surrounds you, no matter you’re embraced by a love of your society, the first thing is you have to take care of yourself, you have to respect yourself so that you live a happy life or a successful life. That’s my theme for The Beautiful Ones. So we’re all beautiful, the young people all over the world but we have to keep our beauty, we have to know our beauty and take care of that beauty very carefully. That’s my theme.

Is your aim, through this film, to raise the morality of the youth?

Yes, the young people should know their beauty inside and outside, their potential, and take good care of it. If you just handle it carelessly, nobody would save you from the danger. No matter who loves you, you can have lots of love, lots of beautiful girls surrounding you, lots of family, your mother, your father can love you but if you don’t take care of your health, it’s sad. It’s so sad to lose such kind of young people because of a silly mistake. They were drinking whisky while driving, imagine, and they drive fast and they talk to other girls who are driving too. They were beautiful but their beauty didn’t help to save their life.

Your hope is that when young people see that film, they will have some kind of example of what could happen if they don’t behave well, and will maybe behave another way.

Yes, that’s what I want, I want to inspire people. I put both of them, I put those who don’t take care of themselves and I put the others who take care of themselves. I put the fiancé, the very loving guy, and I put the adviser of the main actress, he was a very decent man, he doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t drive fast, he doesn’t drink. I put both sides so the young people can choose. They have the model. I didn’t put only the negative side, I also put the positive side so when the young people see the movie, they can identify themselves, they can be inspired who to be.

You set your story in the upper-class of the society. Why did you choose that class especially?

I didn’t choose that higher class, it’s the middle-class. In my movies, I would depict the setting to higher class. I don’t fancy this lower class, I like the story but for Eritrean, it’s not our gift to be displayed. Our image shouldn’t be on the lower class. It’s not our gift to be poor. We’re working hard, it’s a new country, we have all these limitations and challenge from all over, political strength. We’re working hard to be rich. I don’t want our external image to remain as poor class.

How did you find the actors? Do you have movie actors in Eritrea or theatre actors?

You wouldn’t believe it, especially acting, in Eritrea, everybody can act. Without a school. You wouldn’t believe it. Because there’s a need, the culture by itself is art. Lots of acting in the traditional activities, customs, festivals, dancing, ceremony celebrations. There you find a good theatre. You don’t need to send someone to acting college. All you need is to work hard. Everybody can act, it’s not a problem. The only problem is when they get to camera because it’s a new technology to them. So you have to train them with the camera, you have to tell them not to look at it when acting. They’re new ones by the way. Eighty per cent of the actors were new, they had never acted before.

How did you choose them?

They were fit, some of them are university graduates. The story is about university graduates. I wanted them to be mature.

Did you do a casting? Were they friends you knew already?

I did a casting but most of them were friends.

How do you do a casting, do you put an announcement to look for the people?

We don’t do announcement, we just call them. It’s a small city, we know each other very well. You just meet him on the street, “Hey, I need you, come to my office or to my place, I will put you on some acting”. He agrees and he comes, as simple as that. But we do the audition, actually. If one doesn’t fit for the scene, we try another one.

How did you finance the film?

I got my funding from the government ministries.

So there’s a fund for films in Eritrea?

Yes, for most of them. If you talk about social moral, if it has an important message.

If it brings something to the society, they finance it.

Yes, the government finances it then. You just have to have a good proposal, a convincing script.

Does it cover the cost of the film?

Yes. We finished with almost 500 000 nakfas, which is nearly 30 000 US$.

So it’s very cheap for our behaviours.

For us, it’s very expensive. For us, it’s half a million.

What’s the marketing of the film? Do you have cinemas to show it?

Yes, we have. In Eritrea, surprisingly, on week-ends, all the people come to the cinema to see the local films. It’s very crowded, you line up. The people want to see films in their language on the screen. It’s a kind of rewarding audience. Even Eritreans abroad buy the DVD of movies made in our country. Movies from the other countries, even Hollywood movies, don’t get a full audience. They’re shown on week-ends so people go there in the cinemas not to see the movies but just to relax and have fun in the cinemas. It is an advantage for local filmmakers, but the society would need to see the movies from all over the world. We just focus on our movies.

Did you show The Beautiful Ones?

Yes. It is a small country but we showed it three times in one cinema. We have three cinemas in the city, four, five others in the country: ten cinemas altogether. In one cinema, we had one thousand people minimum in one week-end. That’s our audience. It is rewarding !

Do you still have big cinema movies with lots of seats ?

Yes. Italian cinemas : the Emporos, the Roma, the Dante, even the names are still the same !

And did you show it on television as well?

Not this one, but the previous one, Forgiveness, which was about HIV carriers couple, wife and husband. The Ministry of Health liked it, and funded it. It was translated into English and Arab, and broadcasted by the Eritrean TV. It was about the question : could you forgive someone who transmits you the HIV, whether he’s your husband or wife. It’s a very catchy movie because you don’t know who infected who as both the wife and the husband commit adultery. Until the end of the movie, you don’t know who infected who. Who is going to blame the other or are they going to blame themselves only. Finally, when the truth is out, do they need to forgive each other? People like it.

Born in 1978 in Asmara in a place referred as Alfa Romeo, to a family where an art hardly encouraged but spared after his big brother’s inclination to it. “My father always insisted that I should stay intact with education, and that’s why he attentively inspects on all my educational stuffs,” recalls Hagos Weldeghebriel, better known by his namesake – Suzinino nicknamed after his hilarious comedy he produced in 2003. “The inspiration was like an electric shock”, he continued. ”I was in Markato and when I pass through Cinema Asmara toward my home, a crowd of people were gathering at the gate; I asked a man as what is up to with the people and he replied that a drama entitled as ‘Mekeret’ was performing there. Without hesitation, I got in and in no time, I felt I should do something to be like them.” In addition to that, as he had trained about writing and directing a drama by National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students along with some of his contemporaries such as Daniel Amare and Mihreteab Girmay, they established Yohana drama club in 1992. Hence, they started to write dramas though; he further says, “My talent, passion and love towards it predate the establishment of the drama club through my brother’s influence.”

“Mizan Fiqurat, my first drama performed along with my class mates in Denden Secondary School, can be taken as a stepping stone toward my career,” he argued. They performed it in various cities like Adi Keyih, Mendefera, May Habar, Dekemhare and others and got high acclamations, he recalls. Nevertheless, the first drama he produced with Yohana drama club was ‘Serbi‘ authored by Fasil Tesfay, and it was in ‘ FiQri hade deqiQ‘ that he firstly took a comic role, he added. The drama, “directed by me, was a brainchild of Solomon Ghebremedhin (Chico), and it was this very drama that manifested my inner talent-a comedian and since then, along with serious roles, I started to put my comic roles high in my menu” he noted.

“At that time we had a financial constraints to the extent that we sometimes lack money for bus return fare from a tour,” Suzinino’s club cofounder Daniel Amare says. “Only the passion and love of the art was driving us to produce more on which all expenses were met by us and the costume and other necessary articles were brought from our homes,” he further adds.

However, Hagos continues, “the credit for boosting my career goes to Sawa Training Camp. It was when I enrolled to 3rd round; I got the chance to freely exploit my comic talent along with my cultural troupe and the feed back we got from the trainers was further fueled our feelings and enthusiasm to bear such a good performances,” he said. Besides, “for a tongue slip at an occasion where trainers were gathered, ‘Jack’ replaced the very name originally given to me by my parents,” remarks.
<img data-attachment-id='20' data-orig-size='318,231' data-liked='0'width="150" height="108" src="http://eritreanmusic.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/suzinino3_372762017.jpg?w=150&h=108" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="suzinino3_372762017" title="suzinino3_372762017" />
<img data-attachment-id='21' data-orig-size='400,300' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://eritreanmusic.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/suzino-acting.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="suzino-acting" title="suzino-acting" />

”Then after, I wrote, directed and acted in many serious and comic dramas, video clips and TV shows and films, yet the video Suzinino I produced in 2003 was the one that introduced me with the public” he says. The morale of the comedy in particular titled as Suzinino, is as simple as what a flashy person would venture into, and the responses we got from it was encouraging and that is the first drama that tipped my career an enhancement and lifted my vigor, Suzinino further added.

Off course, after that along with my drama mates such as Mihreteab Girmay, Ceasar Zaid, Mihret Tesfa Michael, Saleh Mohammed Said and others, we produced a series of TV and Video clips such as Nsha (2002), Hadgat (2003), Suzinino (2003), and with Saimon Beyene
(Tafla) like Meanta (2004) , Weteto (2006) and soon to be released Mear , he continued . Besides as part of my endeavor on producing films, Hagos further noted, he authored and directed Danait and directed and acted in Simbrat that authored by Salh Mohammed Said; and directed a video clip titled as ‘ Riwyet ‘ which was produced by Teshale Brhane . But, he says, “now I am intensively engaging on a new film, titled as ‘ Ngusat Nail’ “, in which he says, “I am trying to produce it with the current cinematographic techniques and equipments, encompassing a great deal of minor roles ( up to 1000) from all societal strata. The aim, continued he, “is to pave a way and meet with the film standards and participate on FESPACO, the Pan-African Film and Television Festival, held annually in Burkina Faso,”he further says.

“The theoretical and practical courses, we got at Cinema Odeon under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs of the PFDJ, regarding to film production ,cinematography, directing, lighting, sound system, editing and the issue of copy right really helped me on our career,” he further says. At the end of the session, the drama performed by their group titled us ‘Check’, wrote and directed by him, ranked first. The drama, being a metaphor, its message can be summarized as the gloomy life standard of a rich family despite their fortune vis-à-vis the warm and harmonious one of their poor neighbor. Moreover, apart of the 60 plus short TV shows, he either authored or directed ‘ Hyaw Hne, Swr Mistir, Nefri’ among others. In addition, he acted on many festival and Liberation Day ceremonial activities.

Not only did he act in dramas but also wrote many lyrics to some famous Eritrean singers. His song titled as Mahlaki from his first album; a song written to his film, Danait got a wide listener ship. “Many people think that the song was written based on my personal experience, but the truth is in converse,” he argued. “It is merely a romantic experience in which every person at least know about or pass through,” added he. Nevertheless, Hagos continues, “my endeavor is not fully met and I know I should work more, yet the assistance and encouragement from my audience is vital thing,” he stated. And, he adds, “it is a natural thing to encounter immature people who try to impede once vigor and spirit and the right thing one can do, especially an artist, is just to focus and be confident on his/her work” he says.

With the potential, he possesses, along with his striving colleagues amalgamated with constructive criticisms and comments from his audiences, time will show what he is going to bear

Interview conducted in Tigrigna and translated to English by NUEYS Staff

First, let’s start with your nickname, “Qorchach” (kinky hair). How did you get it? Do you hate it?

I can’t remember exactly who gave me this nickname. But my neighborhood kids used to call me by that name ever since I was young. I believe it has to do with my coarse hair which is kinky. I like it, and don’t mind being called by that name.

How did you start your singing career? And when?

Up to the year 2000, I didn’t realize my interest in singing. Before that I was a dancer. I used to repeat the song that we used for dancing in the same voice and tone as the original singers. After hearing my voice, many people encouraged me to sing professionally. Then pushed by my inner urges and outside persuasion, I started singing in 2001.

How many albums have you released so far?

Two. They are, “Menalbat” “Entay giere”. (Note: this interview was conducted before the release of qorchach’s latest [third] album “Titsbit Newihuwa”)

Your first album was not distributed inside Eritrea. Why is that?

I sold the distribution rights for my first album to some businessman. Then I never saw it distributed anywhere. I don’t know the reason. And I’m still waiting.

What was the feed back or reaction you got from the fans after the release of your second album, “Enatay giere”?

I got a very positive and encouraging feedback. This has boosted my morale and helped me to continue in my profession as a singer. Although I can’t say it’s perfect, the reaction I got from the fans has been beyond my expectations.

How do you prepare or write your songs?

I do not play any musical instruments. So the tunes I write or create have to be sung and memorized inside my head. Then I take them to some musicians and prepare and record them. I also write some lyrics. While writing some of the numbers, I prepare both the music (melody) and the poetry (lyrics) at the same time. For example, the songs, “Adey” and “Entay giere” were done in this fashion.

Where, when and in what mood do you write the lyrics for your songs?

I don’t know the reason, but I like quiet and solitude. I want privacy and meditation and enjoying nature. I wrote most of my songs in such situations. I write about some stories I create out of random or sudden inspirations that I get.

Do you use materials (music or lyrics) from other artist?

Yes, I do. For example my songs “Hesebelu,” “Tsebktey” and “friena” were done by other artists. The first was composed by Yunis Said, the lyrics for the second song, “Tsebektey,” (my beautiful one) by Habtom Hafa, and the third was done by Yohannes Tequabo (lyrics) and melody by Tsegay Gebretensae.

Tell us what you felt on your first appearance ever as a singer?

When I started singing I used to copy the style of some singers, such as Dawit (Shelan) and Abrar Osman. In 2001 Dawit arranged for me to sing in Aguadu Sembel (A night club in Asmara). For me that was a dream come true. I sang Abrare’s song “Ayred” and Dawit’s “Semi’ikido.” I enjoyed myself a lot. I don’t know how to describe my feeling at that time. I had mixed emotions of fear, joy and others. When I finished the songs, some people came and encouraged me by saying I did a good job. This was an extra joy for me.

You perform and dance well on stage. Where did you develop this ability? Do you practice alone?

As I mentioned earlier, I was first a dancer before I became a singer. Even earlier I had won some awards and prizes for my dancing in various night clubs. When I started singing I enjoy myself by dancing along with my singing. Personally, I like and enjoy dancing. Later in my career the public’s encouragement added fuel to my work. When I’m on the stage dancing, I lose control of myself and I become totally immersed in the act of dancing.

Do you have any songs (music or lyrics) that you’d copied form abroad (foreign works)?

To be honest, I have one song whose melody I had added some minor Arabic tune or element. Other than that, I don’t intentionally copy from abroad.

At what time does your mood for art rise?

The moment I climb on the stage and hold the mike, I get in the mood for singing and dancing.

Do you have the time when you feel bad and don’t feel like singing?

No, I don’t think so. I get in the mood for singing easily enough.

Do you sometime write songs based on your real life experiences or events? If so what are they, and why did you write them?

Yes, I do. I have three songs which relate to my personal life directly. These songs are: “Friena,” “Adey” (my mother) and “Entay giere” (What have I wronged?). The first two songs “Friena” and “Entay giere” are related to my personal love life. Like most young people, I fell in love while young. I don’t remember all the details, but I wrote about these experiences. The events are similar to the words in the lyrics. The song entitled “Adey” (my mother) is about my own mother. My mother was cruelly killed by the Ethiopian (Derg) soldiers during the colonial era. When I was young, she used to work in the sack building factory. She was mercilessly shot along with other 20 people by the Ethiopian soldiers. I believe you can easily understand my pain and suffering. I wrote the song in order to remember my mother and all the other mothers who were cruelly killed by the enemy.

What is your opinion about young singers of your age? Whom do you especially admire?

Young singers of my age are progressing very fine. I believe that if we work in cooperation, we can produce excellent work which will be famous not only in Eritrea but also in our region as well. I look at them as my mentors and teachers, so I admire them all. But I especially I like and admire Yohannes Tequabo and Dawit Shelan.

How many video clips have you done so far? How hard is the work of preparing or producing a video clip?

So far, I have done two video clips. This work involves changing the song already introduced to the fans (listeners) from audio into visual and artistic form. So it is hard work and needs a capable director. You have to become both a signer and actor at once. There’s also the question of coordinating the sound and the visual (pictures.) If you get a great director you can have a good video clip which is excellently harmonized. You also need to make expenses in order to get good quality work.

Do you try to sing in other languages other than Tigrinya?

Yes. I am practicing for some songs in English and Arabic.

How do you explain your character? What type of person are you?

This question should have been asked to other people who know me. But so far people tell me that I’m modest, gentle and funny (one who enjoys jokes.)

Do you have any bad habits that you would hate or personally would like to stop?

Of course, I’m only human. I have this smoking habit that I would like to quit. As for habits in others, I have nothing that I hate in particular.

What are the characteristics that you like and hate in general?

I hate people who are low in morale and belittle the work of others, gossips and proud boasters. On the other hand I like people who are optimistic, and have characters who are opposite to the ones I mentioned.

What types of food do you like? Do you drink alcohol?

I eat whatever I find. I’m not a chooser. I drink moderately.

Who is your role model? Whose style do you follow?

I like and admire Michael Jackson a lot.

They say that music and drinking don’t go along. Do you agree?

No, I don’t agree.

Who are your fans mostly? The young or…?

Yes, my fans are mostly young. But I believe adults or older people also like it.

What was your ambition when you were young?

I wanted to be a soccer player. I enjoyed playing soccer.

What is your opinion about the “Shengrewa” (the TV-ERI program in search for new singers/artists)?

It is a great program. I feel it has been very late in appearing. I have no doubt that the program will produce many great artists.

Last question. What advice do you have for your peers concerning HIV/AIDS?

I say to them: Let us be careful, careful! Careful!

What profession are you in besides singing? Are you married? Any children?

I am a full time or professional singer. I make my living from it. I am happily married. I hope to continue so, too. And I have five children.

People say that you have been married too many times?

Artists are victims of gossip. But really I was married while in the field. I had a son form my former wife Temerxa, called Shiden. People know him because I sang about him. Unfortunately he died of illness. Later I was married to Adiam, but the marriage did not work out. Now I am married to Ms. Aster Fessaheye. We have five children and we are happy.

Your children’s names and ages?

The eldest, Haren, is aged 12. The rest four, are two years apart. Their names are; Danay, Elshadit, Delina, Sesina.

What future career do you want for your children?

I have many wishes for them. But I think I should leave that to their own desires and potentials, so as not to be a constraint for them.

How do you think should a singer/musician behave?

Fihira: My wife Aster, is here. She can answer you.
Ms. Aster [Fihira's Wife]: Strange enough, I’m not a music lover. On this issue, we are opposites with Tesfay. I know all the nature and problems facing a singer’s life. So, I believe that mutual trust is the basic ingredient here. I trust my husband. But let me tell you we do have many problems. For example, somebody phones our home and says: “Please, let me talk to Tesfay. He had a date with me and did not keep it. ” I tell them, “OK, I’ll tell him and he’ll come.” Some girls slip letters into our home. Telephone calls are continuous. Nowadays they have stopped calling because they have given up hope. They used to disturb me through this and other means. So back to your question: If there’s trust and the wife understands the nature of the job, she can face the challenges and overcome. So all of us, wives of artists, must be steadfast and trustworthy. And the singers need to be strong and faithful to their marriage vows. They must face all the challenges that arise.

Tesfay, what must be the role and nature of a singer’s wife? (In relation to his late working hours, trips, and the drinks offered him, etc.)

I want to add to what Aster said. Because of the nature of their work, singers have direct relationship with the public. They work late hours, travel a lot and the public adores them. They are always surrounded by admirers. It may vary from one individual to the other, but mostly the singer is forced to drink in order to please the public (admirers) who invite him and buy him/her drinks. As everyone knows artists are the focus and get the attention of everyone. If an artist makes even a small mistake, it is magnified everyone talks abut it.

Let me give you an example. Once, Habte Wedi-Shawl had a small accident on his leg around the Cathedral area, Asmara. While his foot was still being treated (dressed,) the news traveled around a lot. Some in May-temenay heard that Wedi-Shawl had hurt his foot. Then, when he heard the news, he said: “Oh, how fast gossip travels. While I haven’t still risen form the place I was hurt at, in the Cathedral area, people in May-temenay heard about my treatment! ” I bring this in order to show: how fast gossip concerning artists, travels about. I urge the public to protect and embrace the artists.

Now to answer the question: The artist’s wife is his partner. She should understand the nature of his job. She needs to enhance her trust, be mature, defy all gossip and heresy, encourage and support him, in order to help her husband become a better artist and person. This helps not only the individual singer but the national art. On the other hand, we singers/artists, starting from myself, must not abuse alcohol. We must learn to entertain ourselves and socialize by avoiding hard alcoholic drinks. We must resist the temptation of trying to please the public which offers you alcoholic drinks at the cost of your health and sobriety.

Tell us about your feeling in your first stage appearance?

My first appearance where I realized my long-time dream was in a town called Korbaria. It was during the liberation struggle (Revolution or Gedli) era. I can’t express my feeling at that time.

What musical instruments can you play? And how useful is this ability to a singer?

I play the “Kirar.” And the drums, but I haven’t followed these skills regularly. I can also use the guitar and organ (key-board) for writing melodies or tunes. We all took lessons on music notes. But since we did not follow it up and deepen it we couldn’t continue writing music using musical notes. I hope and plan to continue my musical note studies. May God help me! Its usefulness to singer is very clear. It enables him/her to become a professional musician.

What is your observation concerning the discipline and progress of our artists?

There are many artists who are well-disciplined, respect their colleagues and who are modest. But these comprise only a tenth of the total. But in my view, most of the musicians are ill-disciplined, don’t evaluate themselves properly, don’t respect people, and proper working hours, are show-offs, talk too much, and don’t work to improve themselves.

What is your opinion regarding the patriotic sensitization (promotion) conducted by artists in comparison with that done the past? And how should it be?

When you see it in relation to the time and the situation, the patriotic sensitization conducted by artists in the past was very powerful. During the armed struggle, our Front did not use powerful cannons and advanced weapons to fight against those deployed by the enemy. The only asset of our revolution was political consciousness. This enabled us to face all those huge challenges and win. I think the role of the artist in enhancing this patriotic consciousness and expressing the reality artistically was commendable.
Even today, artists are working hard in this area. Many artists are rising and developing and producing much highly valuable artistic works. The difference, is today’s products are, unlike of the past, soon forgotten. The old products continue for a long time. So we must all work hard to produce works, like in the past that are universal and immortal.

What in you opinion is the current role and contribution of our singers/artists in keeping up our cultural values?

Before we speak about the singers/artists, first let us talk about the people in general. With all honesty our people have a great history of national liberation struggle. They have fought for justice and liberation and won. They are patriotic, honest and modest. They fought against all high odds for the sake of truth and justice. We artists are, naturally, the mirrors of the people. So, must not only march along side the public, but become its guiding force. We must play a leading role in enhancing, maintaining and passing along of the cultural values.

But here arises the question: Are we up to this task? I’m not so sure. The challenges in today’s world are high. So we must work hard in order to face and overcome them?

What do you have to say about the negative values or taboo that we have to combat as a nation?

We need to avoid pretension, trying to be someone else, and looking down on others, to take yourself too seriously and show off. We need to respect professionalism and avoid disrespecting the profession. Others are gossiping, jealousy, instead of fighting them, following the negative values for personal gains. I believe everybody, including me, should avoid these bad traits.

How do you define the cooperation among you, artists?

There is a little cooperation. But I want to add to what Helen Melles said earlier in her interview with this magazine. I believe these traits like jealousy, pretension, trying to outdo others through gossip and defamation are becoming common.

Do you have people helping you in writing music (lyrics and melody)?

Up to now I have been writing my own material. But I have learned from experience that I need help from others and must help others. For example my work, “Ambasader” was sung by Estifanos Abraham (Zemach.) I did Yemane’s work, “Ferihelki,” and the result was good. So I believe that the change of style and cooperation is necessary.

What is the role of musicians? And which musicians do you admire? Do you like traditional or modern music in your work?

I believe that musicians should be trained in scientific means by professionals in their field. I respect those kind. I am not talking about those who sing in nightclubs and wedding ceremonies. We have some professionals who can teach us music. But these people, who can help the artists a lot, are currently only limited to teaching children to certain level.
Recently a seminar workshop was conducted entitled, “Our music and its direction.” Many artists presented much constructive ideas during the seminar. I hope we may see the results. The role of properly trained musicians in the development of songs is clear and positive.

I admire Luigi, Efrem, Abdella, Tesfamariam, Kaleb, Yemane Kidane and others that I did not mention here. I wish them great success and development, so they can improve our musical culture highly.

I like all music, traditional and modern. I only need to work and continue my efforts to improve.

When is your [next] album going to be released? I think you are late.

Yes, you are right. I had already written and prepared a cassette. I sold the distribution rights to someone. They are late in distribution for some unknown technical reason. So I am just waiting for them. If they’re too tardy, I’ll just go ahead and prepare another cassette. The title is, “Desiet lebi” (island in the heart). It’s a love song. As for the rest of the songs, the content of the lyrics is half romance and half patriotic.

How do you find the condition of music in the country? How do you see the lyrics (in songs)? Which is more important in a song, the melody or the words (lyric)?

My ideas are similar to the evaluation given in the recent seminar concerning the situation of music in the country. Regarding our lyrics, except for those presented during the national holidays, most of the songs produced individually deal mostly with love/romance. Although singing about love is good, we should also focus on the other issues in our life and country, such as nation, identity, etc. I believe both sides of the song, the melody and the lyrics contribute to the song’s power and beauty.

What is the meaning of music to you? And do practice for the dance part in your stage presentation?

For me music is everything, love, happiness, struggle, success, steadfastness, etc. It is the reflection of life’s secret. In the past I used to practice for my stage appearances in front of the mirror. Not anymore.

What type of character do you have?

I feel uncomfortable talking about myself, because I am modest. I like truth and honesty, and do not like to annoy or harm others. I hate credit (loans), so if I owe somebody some money, I feel restless until I’ve returned that money. I feel very angry when someone harms or exploits me. I think that’s enough.

Have you written songs based on your true life experiences?

All my songs written during the revolution, war, struggle, the hardship, etc. are based on real experiences about the struggle. All my love songs are also based on my true life experiences. I hope to write my love experiences in a book in the future, because they area so many. We do not have the time to go into them. I have been very unlucky in love.

How do you spend most of your time?

I am a family man responsible for all my kids, wife and others. So, most of my time is taken by family affairs. Things like taking the kids to school and back, etc. I like reading newspapers, and Tigrinya novels. I also enjoy watching Eritrean (Tigrinya, etc.) films with my family over the week-ends regularly. When I get the time I prepare songs (lyrics, etc.). But when I travel abroad I have more time and privacy for my creative musical work.

Any last advice to the youth concerning HIV/AIDS?

Yes. We have to see and realize the times we are living in, is very challenging. The youth should avoid alcohol because it is misleading them to tragedy. They must also abstain from pre-marital sex. Please be careful. Even if those who have HIV, should not be demoralized but must carry on to lead a long life through care and support.
